Subject: XFEL DESY project group meeting

Dear collegues,
over the last months a small group of us has been setting up a draft
organizational structure for the preparatory phase of the new XFEL
Project at DESY with the goal to form a firm basis for a government decision
to go forward with the construction of the facility. The hope is that
this can be achieved within the next approx. 2 years.
In this context we have tried to divide up the project as we now know
it into various 'Work Packages' .
 Many of you have been contacted by
one or more of us in this context and the resulting subdivision and
responsibilities have been sketched in a Work Package List, a copy of
which is attached to this email.
The work package leaders (WPLs) are members of what we call the 'XFEL Project
Group'. It is intended that this group meet every week on Wednesdays,
13:00-14:30 in Building 30b, Seminarroom 459, 4th floor.
You are cordially invited to attend the first meeting which is now
scheduled for
    Wednesday, August 6th, 13:00-14:30
    Building 30b, Seminarroom 459
The meeting is open, but it is primarily addressed to the Work Package
Leaders (or their representatives). Minutes of the meeting will be
posted on a new web site together with copies of the transparencies
and alike such that everybody can inform her/himself about the
project.
The tentative agenda of the first meeting is:
1. Introductory remarks (J. Schneider)
2. Work packages and role of WPLs
3. Tools and services (web site, mailing lists, etc.)
4. Basic goals (review project scope and parameters, workshops together with
users to this extend; preparation of `blueprint' for the machine; preparation of
specifications for major technical components for industrial production;
determination of required financial and human resources)
5. How to proceed in near-term future and tentative agendas for next meetings
   (Aug. 13: accelerator basic layout and parameter space; Aug. 20: Overview and
   discussion of user requirements)
6. A.O.B.
7. meeting summary and action items
